Q: I am wanting to install a home theater in my house, but I don't have the "ideal" room for this. I also don't have the budget right now to finish the basement to make the "ideal" home theater room. The TV will have to sit in the corner of the room, rather than centered on a wall, because that's where the fireplace is. What are my options for speakers since there is only about a foot to the right of the TV before the fireplace starts, and my wife will not let me put a speaker on the mantle? Todd, NY

A: Todd, you have a couple of readily available options to solve this problem. You could go with small satellite speakers and place them on narrow stands on either side of the TV, or even on the TV if you don't want anymore floor clutter. These are not "ideal" solutions because of the lack of distance between speakers, but sometimes you have to work with what you have. The best option you may have, although it is dependent on the accessibility to your ceilings, would be to have installed flushmounted in-ceiling speakers.

Q: I really like all the features satellite TV has to offer, but I have seven TV's in my house and don't want to put seven satellite receivers throughout my house. What options do I have? Marc, St. Louis

A: Marc, you could conveniently locate however many satellite receivers you may be comfortable having, and modulate them throughout the house to the other TV's. There are numerous ways to do this, depending on your budget and your operating preferences. If you were to contact a local custom installation company they should be able to guide you in the right direction for your situation.

Q: I had a few pairs of speakers installed throughout my house and a stereo setup in my hearth room to drive them. After the first couple of uses, the speakers kept going out. One time, while in the hearth room, I heard the stereo click and the display said "protection". I called the company out that installed the system, and after four trips and multiple replaced speakers the problem still exists. They don't seem to know what the problem is. Any suggestions? David, Denver

A: David, we've experienced the same problem in the past when we've used someone's existing stereo to drive more speakers than it was designed to. We found the stereo was underpowered and incapable of running as many speakers as were installed. Once this was demonstrated to the customer by temporarily setting up a stereo that we recommended, they gave theirs to one of their children and purchased the more robust one from us.
